Alan D. Schwartz T'72
Alan Schwartz is executive chairman of Guggenheim Partners, a privately held global financial firm with more than $100 billion in assets under supervision. He is the former chief executive officer of The Bear Stearns Companies. During his career with Bear Stearns, he served as president and chief operating officer, as executive vice president and co-head of investment banking, and in other financial management positions.
He earned a B.A. in management science from Duke in 1972 and has served as chairman of the Fuqua School of Business Board of Visitors and as a member of the Athletic Advisory Board. Mr. Schwartz served as giving chair for his thirtieth reunion and as class chair for his thirty-fifth reunion.
Mr. Schwartz is a member of the boards of the Robin Hood Foundation, St. Vincent's Services, MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, American Foundation for AIDS Research, NYU Langone Medical Center and Madison Square Garden.
Mr. Schwartz is married to Nancy Seaman. They reside in Greenwich, Connecticut, and have five children: Adam Schwartz; Jennifer Schwartz, class of 2003; Ryan Schwartz, class of 2009; Callie Seaman, class of 2012; and Jamie Schwartz, class of 2015.
A member of the Duke Board of Trustees since 2005, he is chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, serves on the Executive and Medical Center Academic Affairs Committees, and previously was a member of the Audit Committee.
